چکیده

Research on the cognitive science of sentence processing has been driven heavily by the study of resolution of syntactic ambiguity in Garden Path sentences. Recent work has shown that apart from syntax, semantics is another essential component that affects the analysis of sentences. In this study, we analyze the role of semantic plausibility in resolution of syntactically ambiguous Garden Path Sentences. Theory of Incremental Evaluation • Sentences processed sequentially, most ’probable’ parse tree selected at every word. • Probability predominantly defined by the syntactical role of words, rather than semantic meaning. Garden Path sentences: The most likely parse in incremental evaluation will be incorrect. → The criminal confessed his sins which upset kids harmed too many people. →As the woman edited the magazine about fishing amused all the reporters. Impossible to parse sentences! Proposed Theory [Pickering and Traxler, 1998] ♦ Syntactic role of elements in a sentence predominantly controls its parsing, BUT semantic plausibility of the parse defines the extent of attachment towards the sentence. ♦Greater semantic plausibility of inital parse → Greater attachment → Larger time in reanalysis → ↑ Regressions, ↑ First pass time

Reading Sentences with a Late Closure Ambiguity: Does Semantic Information Help?

Stowe (1989) reported that semantic information eliminates garden paths in sentences with the direct-object vs. subject ambiguity, such as Even before the police stopped the driver was very frightened. Three experiments are presented which addressed some methodological problems in Stowe's study. Experiment 1, using a word-by-word, self-paced reading task with grammaticality judgements, manipula...

The effect of adding gaze direction recognition to stabilizing exercises on pain, muscular endurance and proprioception women with chronic non-specific neck pain

Aims and background: Gaze direction recognition is one of the new treatments method for neck pain. The positive effects of stabilization exercises in various studies on neck pain have also been confirmed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of adding a gaze direction recognition program to common stabilizing exercises on neck pain intensity, muscular endurance and pro...

Direct and Indirect Measures of Attention Indicate a Bias Toward Cues in Methamphetamine Users

Introduction:This study aims to investigate the attentional bias toward drug-related stimuli along with subjective craving after encountering such stimuli in methamphetamine users. Studies of cue reactivity have confirmed bias in attention and gaze to drug-related stimuli for most substances, but methamphetamine drugs are less studied by a direct measure such as eye tracking. Methods:Thirty ma...

Non-verbal Signals for Turn-taking and Feedback

This paper concerns non-verbal communication, and describes especially the use of eye-gaze to signal turn-taking and feedback in conversational settings. Eye-gaze supports smooth interaction by providing signals that the interlocutors interpret with respect to such conversational functions as taking turns and giving feedback. New possibilities to study the effect of eye-gaze on the interlocutor...

Session 5aSC: Speech Communication 5aSC26. The role of fundamental frequency and temporal envelope in processing sentences with temporary syntactic ambiguities

While natural speech prosody facilitates sentence processing, unnatural or misleading prosody decreases speed and accuracy in resolving syntactic ambiguities. This study investigated how, and to what extent, fundamental frequency (F0) and the temporal envelope (E) contribute to processing gardenpath sentences that provide misleading grammatical interpretations. Signal processing methods degrade...
